Wade Burns breaks silence after PASA presidential election

An SA Police officer – who until recently was deputy president of the police union – is facing charges for allegedly failing to stop at a crash scene and give his details to authorities and another driver involved.

Brevet Sergeant Daryl Wayne Mundy, 54, of Rosewater, has faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court, charged with one count of failing to stop and give particulars to persons at a crash scene and one count of failing to give particulars about a crash to a police officer.

It is alleged the offences occurred after Mr Mundy was involved in a crash on Morphett St, Adelaide on February 7 this year.

At the time, Mr Mundy was campaigning for re-election in the Police Association of South Australia general elections.

He was promoted from PASA’s vice-president to deputy-president in July last year and retained that role until he was ousted at the elections in March.

Under the Australian Road Rules, drivers involved in a crash must provide their name and address, the name and address of the owner of the vehicle, the vehicle’s registration number and any other information necessary to identify the vehicle to any other people involved in the crash as well as to police.

This information must be provided as soon as possible but in exceptional circumstances, within 24 hours of a crash.

Mr Mundy did not enter a plea when he appeared in court on Tuesday.

His case was adjourned until July 1.

Attempts were made to contact Mr Mundy.

The incident is the latest in a series of controversies involving the involving the police union.

In February, it was revealed that SA Police had reopened an investigation into PASA president Wade Burns following allegations aired in state parliament in relation to an alleged indecent assault at an Adelaide nightclub in 2017.

The matter was later closed and no further action was taken.

In September last year, police launched an inquiry into claims that serving officers and police union staff were regularly bullied and belittled by a “boys’ club” of senior union officials.

SA Police declined to comment.

PASA did not respond to The Advertiser’s request for comment.
