New phase of South Rd project set for nightworks over the next month
Disruptive nightworks will be undertaken over four straight weeks along the major section of the T2D project.
Nightworks on a new phase of the South Rd project are set to be undertaken over the next four weeks, where twin tunnels stretching 4.5 kilometres will be built.
Early preparations on the southern precinct of the $15.4bn River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) project will stretch from South Rd, between Norrie Ave, Clovelly Park, and Tonsley Blvd, Tonsley.
Works, including trenching, service relocation and installation of signage along South Rd will be undertaken from June 8 to July 6, between 7pm and 7am, Sunday to Thursday.
The trenching works are for the removal of overhead powerlines on South Road, which will be installed underground.
Two new link roads - Norrie and English avenues, and York and Selgar avenues - are now open to traffic.
Several upgrades to surrounding streets along the T2D project are also being delivered.
The 1300m-long site will house giant new boring machines to build its southern tunnels, with works scheduled for the second half of 2026.
The Department for Transport and Infrastructure (DTI) acknowledged there would be disruptions over the month but was undertaking the works at night to cause as minimal impacts to traffic as possible.
“South Rd will remain open at all times while works are completed, with speed and lane restrictions in place,” they said.
“Some disturbances can be expected such as noise, dust and vibration, however construction crews will work to keep disruption to a minimum.
Up to 550 workers were expected to be employed at the southern precinct during peak construction, with the entire T2D Project to support approximately 5500 jobs per year during main construction.
DTI has asked motorists to follow signage when travelling through the area.
Last week, Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis revealed unique “loop” exits would allow traffic to turn right from Anzac Highway on to South Rd.
