Huge hangar bigger than Adelaide Oval to create hundreds of jobs

Three new fast-food restaurants, a childcare centre and an automotive dealer are coming to Adelaide’s northern suburbs, bringing hundreds of jobs.

Plans have been lodged for a KFC and Hungry Jack’s in a commercial hub opposite established housing at Edinburgh North, along Womma Rd, on empty land alongside an existing McDonald’s.

Commercial property developers Leyton Property are proposing to build three fast-food restaurants in total, with the third “national” operator not yet named, managing director Hamish Brown said.

A fourth, 400 sqm building will house a national automotive-brand operator at the end of hub on the corner of Womma and Stebonheath roads.

The plans show a fifth, larger 2800 sqm building would be a childcare centre at the end of the hub, but it’s subject to a separate development application.

Mr Brown said about 100 jobs would be created by construction, which is hoped to begin in the third quarter of the, depending on approvals.

“Post-construction, probably the same kind of number, on a combination of casual and part-time basis – it won’t be 100 people there at a time, but these quick-service restaurants, they employ a lot of young people in casual roles.

“The McDonald’s we did next door, there’s probably 60 to 70 staff, but that’s a bigger store than the KFC or the Hungry Jack’s.

“The other building will be a national automotive, car-service or tyre operator.”

Mr Brown said he hoped the hub would be finished and open by April or May 2026

More than 60 carparks are part of the proposed fast-food and retail strip.

One significant tree would be removed and two other trees retained. More than 20 per cent of the site would be landscaped.

The proposal covers about 1ha of the 8ha area of land.

The plans are on public consultation until March 3.
