Nakia Crystal Barry fronts court after ‘violent attack’ outside Seaford shopping centre
A heavily intoxicated woman who allegedly stabbed a man in the neck outside a packed suburban shopping centre has faced court for the first time.
A “grossly intoxicated” woman who allegedly stabbed a man in the neck outside a busy southern suburbs shopping centre has been granted bail.
Nakia Crystal Barry, 26, appeared in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court for the first time on Wednesday charged with aggravated assault causing harm and affray. She is yet to enter any pleas.
A police prosecutor told Magistrate Todd Grant they were opposed to bail, alleging the attack happened in “broad daylight”.
“It’s a violent attack in broad daylight in front of members of the public,” they said.
“Both were homeless at the time. They seem to be co-dependent on each other for survival.
“They were both grossly intoxicated. Police had an earlier intervention with them from reports from members of the public – then a short time later, police were called back.”
The man, 25, was taken to hospital after suffering a wound to his neck following the altercation in the carpark of the Seaford Central Shopping Centre, just before 3pm on Tuesday.
Horrified shoppers who witnessed the ordeal said a couple had been swearing and throwing things at each other, including a broken glass bottle.
One woman said it was “terrifying” that something like this could happen at the shopping centre, which is located across the road from a high school.
“That’s pretty terrifying especially with young children around,” she told 7NEWS.
Another local said the “crazy” incident was one of many to happen in the area.
“The amount of crime that is happening (...) there’s a lot that happens here recently and it’s not great,” they said.
Ms Barry was taken into custody for questioning with crime scene investigators arriving on scene shortly after.
On Wednesday, Mr Grant granted Ms Barry’s bail application to reside with her mother – who was present in court – at a Seaford Meadows property.
She will return to court next month.
Anyone who witnessed the incident and hasn’t yet spoken with police is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
