Mannum-based man dies in car crash in SA’s Murray Mallee region
A 49-year-old man has died at the scene of a car crash in Murray Mallee on Monday night – marking the first life lost on South Australian roads this year.
A man has died at the scene of a car crash in Murray Mallee on Monday night.
Emergency services responded to calls a car had gone down an embankment and crashed into a tree just after 9.30pm on Monday on Purnong Rd at Caurnamont, near Younghusband.
The driver, a 49-year-old man from Mannum, died at the scene.
The road was closed in both directions for a number of hours while Major Crash officers examined the scene but has since reopened.
Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said the first road fatality of 2025 was a “stark reminder” of the importance of safety.
“Every time you step out onto the road, whether it be a vehicle, motorcycle or as a pedestrian on a bike, you have to think about your own wellbeing and safety and the safety of the people around you,” Mr Stevens said.
“Lapses in concentration, complacency, can have devastating consequences.”
He did not provide any further details of the man killed such as his age or where he lived.
The man’s death is the first life lost on South Australian roads this year.
