A 53-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car in a serious early morning crash in Adelaide’s east.

Emergency services were called to Glynburn Rd, Tranmere, just before 6am on Friday following reports a pedestrian had been struck by a silver Honda sedan opposite Kmart at Firle Plaza, near Richardson Ave.

The 53-year-old could be seen on CCTV walking with her umbrella across an empty car park before attempting to cross the road.

She stopped to check for oncoming traffic, waiting for a car to pass before making her way across Glynburn Rd.

Seconds later, another vehicle struck the woman, throwing her about 50m down the main road.

Tragically, the female pedestrian died at the scene.

SES crews erected a tent on the rain-slicked road as Major Crash officers conducted their investigations throughout the morning and traffic diversions were put in place.

The driver – a 21-year-old Hectorville man – was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, badly shaken but not injured. His 24-year-old passenger was also not injured.

“He was going to work and the lady just came out of nowhere in front of him,” a friend of his at the scene said.

“He hit her and called the police and now they are doing the investigation.”

At the scene, the front windscreen of the car involved was completely smashed, as police and SES crews continued working in the pouring rain.

Glynburn Rd was closed to southbound traffic throughout the morning’s peak hour but has since reopened after the silver Honda sedan was towed from the scene.

It comes as the Port River Expressway reopened on Friday morning after an overnight crash.

A car hit a light pole on the median strip and ended up in a ditch on the expressway at Wingfield about 2.45am.

The driver, a 32-year-old Elizabeth North man, was extricated from the wrecked car and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

His passenger, a 21-year-old Elizabeth Downs woman, also sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.
