A group of thugs left a tourist unconscious after stomping on him and robbing him of his pokies winnings.
Korelle Ross Wintinna, 19, Malachi Aldren Oldfield, 22, and Lindsay Warren Treloar, 24, are behind bars for the vicious attack.
During sentencing, the District Court heard the trio were at the Tassie Tavern in Port Augusta in May 2024.
The victim, an Estonian national travelling Australia on a working visa, was also at the bar and talked to the group.
The victim, who won about $400 on the pokies, was captured on CCTV just after 2am sitting on a bench.
The men’s co-accused – who is exploring whether he is fit to plead – allegedly attacked him, before the victim ran away.
The men pursued him, with Oldfield tackling him to the ground.
“All four of you then engaged in punching and kicking him on the ground,” Auxiliary Judge Gordon Barrett said.
They stole $750 cash, as well as the victim’s mobile phone and wallet.
The court heard a bystander tried to help the victim, who managed to get to his feet.
However, the group pursued him again and tackled him to the ground.
“You kicked him and stomped him for about a minute until the police arrived,” Auxiliary Judge Barrett said.
“The victim was found by the police lying on the ground, bleeding from the head and face with bruises.
“He was in and out of consciousness.”
Police say they saw a Nike shoe on the scene, it’s alleged Oldfield approached and asked for it back.
“You lied by telling the police that you lost the shoe trying to help the victim,” Auxiliary Judge Barrett said.
Police searched him and found some of the stolen cash, with Wintinna and Treloar also located nearby.
The victim suffered a broken nose, facial injuries and damage to his teeth which required a tooth to be removed and replaced by an implant.
The trio pleaded guilty to robbery and causing harm with intent.
In his victim impact statement, the victim said because he was an international visitor, he was not covered by public health or insurance and his treatment cost several thousand dollars.
“He said that what you did to him has made him lose faith in people,” Auxiliary Judge Barrett said.
“He says that he never stood a chance.
“Before this attack, he was thinking of coming back to Australia to find a more permanent life here but he now plans to return home.”
Adding on other offending, Wintinna was sentenced to six years and two months jail, with a non-parole period of three years and two months.
The sentence is backdated to March 30.
Oldfield and Treolar were jailed for five years and 11 months.
Oldfield was given a non-parole period of three years and eight months, backdated to May 27, 2024.
Treolar was given a non-parole period of three years, backdated to May 15.
