A man and woman have been assaulted and carjacked by a duo armed with a knife at a midnight encounter in Adelaide’s northeast.

Police were called Westfield Tea Tree Plaza shopping centre carpark on North East Rd at about 12.07am on Friday after a man reported he and his girlfriend had been threatened by two men.

The two men demanded the keys so the victim handed them over. But as the pair attempted to start the grey 2015 Mercedes-Benz sedan the suspects couldn’t work out how to release the handbrake.

The victim then tried to get his keys back but was assaulted by the suspects.

The pair then drove off with the handbrake still on, with the car making a loud noise as it drove away.

The victim received a cut to his finger and was also punched in the head. He was treated at hospital for his injuries.

The woman was not injured.

Police are searching for the vehicle – registration XD428W with thin-spoke mag wheels – and the suspects are still on the loose.

The first suspect is described as being of Aboriginal appearance, about 170cm tall, medium build and was wearing dark clothing.

The second suspect is also described as being of Aboriginal appearance, about 176cm tall, slim build and was wearing dark clothing. Both men were believed to be in their early 20s.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or sees the car is asked to call the Police Assistance Line on 131444.
