Video has emerged of a Labor volunteer ripping down an election poster at a seaside early polling booth. The poster targeting the Labor and the Greens parties was strung up in the knife-edge seat of Boothby and was the same type of campaign material the Australian Electoral Commission yesterday deemed illegal.
A volunteer dressed in a red Labor t-shirt with a blue jacket over the top, was seen pulling one of the posters off a fence near the Brighton surf lifesaving club federal election polling booth.
He was armed with how-to-vote papers for Boothby, where Labor sitting member Louise Miller-Frost is battling it out with the Liberal’s Nicolle Flint with a 3.3 per cent margin.
When Ms Miller-Frost won Boothby for the ALP in 2022 it was the first time the party had won the seat in more than 70 years.
A profusion of the election posters popped up in Adelaide’s highly marginal seat of Boothby with the AEC issuing a cease and desist statement to the man as they were only partially authorised by ‘M Jonas, Melbourne Victoria’.
“The authorisation particulars are not compliant with the requirements of section 321D of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Cth) because they do not include the individual’s full name and a full street address.”
However, the poster torn down by the volunteer appeared to have been afixed with a sticker across its base saying it was authorised by M Jonas and his address in Melbourne when he threw it into a nearby rubbish bin.
There is no suggestion the volunteer engaged in unlawful conduct.
The AEC issued a statement saying the posters were only partially authorised by “M Jonas, Melbourne Victoria”.
Mitcham Council was forced to remove several of the placards authorised by M Jonas as they were illegally strapped to public land fencing along Fullarton Road in Mitcham this week.
Anti-vaxxer Morgan Jonas established the right-wing Freedom Party of Victoria in 2022.
The Labor Party has been contacted for comment.
