THE Weekly Times’ 2020 Shine Awards winners have been recognised for their extraordinary contributions to regional communities, business and industries at a celebratory lunch yesterday.
Carmel Beresford, of Eulo in outback Queensland, was named overall winner of the 2020 Shine Awards, a campaign by The Weekly Times in partnership with Harvey Norman.
Herald and Weekly Times chairman Penny Fowler and Harvey Norman chief executive Katie Page presented Carmel and the category winners with awards at Cruden Farm on International Women’s Day.
A teacher, farmer, author and mother, Carmel was honoured for writing a book about the life and tragic death of her 21-year-old son, Sam, who was killed 10 years ago in a freak gyrocopter accident on the family’s cattle station.
Her book has resonated with readers across the nation, and given Australians a deeper understanding of what farm families go through to put food on Australian tables.
Monday’s lunch was also attended by Passion winner Kate Davis of Ballarat, Belief winner Simone Dudley of Deniliquin, NSW, and Grace winner Georgia Foster Eyles, from Nymboida, NSW.
Kate is a tourism guru who has founded food-and-drink events that draw throngs to Ballarat. Occupational therapist Simone has built an innovative online telehealth service to give rural families equal access to essential therapies. Georgia won the Grace category for helping her bushfire-hit community recover from blazes that destroyed 80 homes in 2019.
Dedication winner Lauwana Blackley and Spirit winner Meg Clothier also received awards. Nurse Lauwana was honoured for her work running Palm Island’s dialysis clinic while Meg was celebrated for spending a year as a farm caretaker on rural properties to give primary producers a break from drought.
