Heatwave warnings have been issued for Aussies across several states ahead of a scorching weekend.

Queensland on alert for flooding after heavy rainfall

Millions of Aussies are being warned as another heatwave is expected to sweep much of the country through the weekend and into next week.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for severe to extreme heatwave conditions for parts of WA, Victoria, NSW, NT, SA, and Tasmania, with the sweltering temperatures expected to stick around until early next week.

BOM senior meteorologist Dean Narramore said parts of Queensland and the ACT were among the only areas to be spared.

“We’re likely to see many areas experience temperatures in the high-30s to low-40s for inland areas (and) Tasmania in the low- to mid-30s, but night-time temperatures (are) also likely to be into the low- to mid-20s for much of southern and eastern (or) southeastern Australia,” he said.

Sydneysiders can look forward to a milder weekend with a maximum of 27C on Saturday and 28C on Sunday.

Maximums in Brisbane are expected to reach 32C on Saturday and 30C on Sunday, with showers possible throughout the weekend.

A top of 26C is forecast or Hobart throughout the weekend, rising to 33C on Monday.

Darwin is likely to see a top of 33C on Saturday and 34C on Sunday and the next several days, with a chance of storms each day.

The heatwave warnings come as two bushfires remain active in the Grampians National Park in Victoria’s west, which have together burned through about 18,000 hectares.

Authorities say they are concerned the fires could merge due to the anticipated hot and windy conditions this weekend.

Fire permits in vulnerable areas have been suspended to mitigate the heightened risk.

Residents in areas including Glenisla, Mooralla, Rocklands, and Woohlpooer have been advised to evacuate immediately.

Those in heatwave-affected areas are being urged to remain vigilant, follow advice from local authorities, and take necessary precautions such as staying hydrated and cool.
