Combined Forces Show Steer and Heifer Sale coming up
Combined Forces Show Steer and Heifer Sale will be held at Kalbar.
COMBINING more than 70 years of show-ring experience, the Sowden and Goetsch families will offer the absolute “top lines” of their show teams at a special sale.
The stud breeders will work together for the inaugural Combined Forces Show Steer and Heifer Sale at the Kalbar Showgrounds.
Mr Sowden, based at Kingaroy, described working with Neil Goetsch, from Kalbar, as being a natural fit.
The two families have known each other for about 30 years, often competing as rivals in the show ring.
“We decided there was a niche market for top-end calves,” he said.
“We are not selling our second-grade steers and heifers, these are the top of the top.”
Looking across the lots on offer, Mr Sowden couldn’t pick a favourite.
Mr Goetsch described them as the “best lines” he had ever bred.
“I can’t say there is an absolute standout. What I like in cattle is slightly different to my wife, which can be different to what Neil wants,” Mr Sowden said.
“We, the Sowden family, won the led champion steer in 2013 and 2015 at the Brisbane Royal so we know the kind of cattle you need to win at an exhibition.
“This sale will give everyone an opportunity to buy top-end calves. A lot of them will be perfect for the Royal Sydney in 2021 and for the Brisbane Exhibition as lightweight calves.”
Mr Sowden runs both Sowdens Speckle Park and Five Star Limousin, and the Goetsch family are at the helm of Kents Lagoon Limousins.
Most of the calves, which range from five months to 12 months old, are still on their mums in the paddock.
“They all have access to creep feed,” he said.
“So their ruminants are set up so they can go straight on to grain without any setbacks.
“Neil has a few older calves that have been broken in. There are two or three he has worked with so they are ready to go.”
Mr Sowden stressed the sale wasn’t exclusive to folks passionate about the show ring. “Whether you want prime cattle for the prime shows, a champion led steer or just quality breeders – there will be something for everyone,” he said.
