A MELTING pot of “battlers”, “bogans” and “hipsters” underpins a vision for regional Australian cities to be outlined in a speech by Nationals deputy leader Bridget McKenzie to the National Press Club in Wodonga today.

Senator McKenzie, who is also Minister for Regional Services and Decentralisation, will address what she says is an incorrect assertion that regional Australia is only made up of farmers and miners.

Senator McKenzie is expected to point out the regions are a “drawcard” for people to work in, with a bright future.

Senator McKenzie believes if Australia is going to face up to future economic challenges it needs to have a better focus on regions.

She says the Nationals still recognise the importance of agriculture and mining as key to the nation’s prosperity but insists regionals areas are also more than this.

“The Nationals vision for regional Australia is one that is connected, modern and dynamic,” Senator McKenzie says in her speech.

“A regional Australia made up of regional cities, where the battlers, the bogans and the hipsters live in harmonious utopia.”
