Police probe shooting, suspicious car fire in Kellyville, Sydney
Three “traumatised” people who were inside a Sydney home when it was sprayed with bullets were likely not the intended targets, police say.
Three people who were inside a home in Sydney’s northwest when it was sprayed with bullets in a late-night shooting have been left “traumatised”, police say.
The home on Nangar Crescent in Kellyville was targeted just after 11pm on Wednesday.
Police arried to find damage to the front door and windows of the home, and several glass panels smashed.
Police now believe the shooting was targeted but likely a case of mistaken identity.
Superintendent Naomi Moore said the occupants - a 48-year-old woman and two men, aged 18 and 44 - were not known to police, and their reaction to the shooting suggested they were not the intended targets.
“At this point in time we believe the wrong house was targeted and the wrong people were targeted,” she said.
“There are other premises nearby in the vicinity that may have had issues in the past.”
Superintendent Moore confirmed the trio were uninjured in the shooting.
“They’re traumatised, they’re rightfully very upset,” she said.
“People are entitled to live in their homes not in fear and these people have been targeted wrongfully and their lives have been turned upside down overnight.”
Police are investigating whether a car that was torched in the nearby suburb of Rouse Hill a short time later is connected to the shooting.
“While police were speaking with the occupants, a second job came in involving a vehicle fire,” Superintendent Moore said.
“At the moment we believe there is a link between them.”
Firefighters extinguished the fire but the vehicle was completely destroyed.
A major investigation is now under way, with police probing possible links to organised crime and whether the offenders fled on foot through a reserve near the torched car.
“A dog attended and tracked towards the reserve,” Superintendent Moore said.
“People don’t drive around shooting at people’s houses unless there’s some element of organised crime.”
