The bad ass pop singer P!nk proposed to her motocross champion boyfriend on the third lap of a race in Mammoth, California in 2005.

She stepped out of the pit, holding up a sign: “Will you marry me?”

He didn’t pull over, so when he rounded the track again, she brandished a pit board with “Serious” on it and her future husband immediately detoured, almost taking out fellow racers, to pick up his girl and give her the answer she wanted.

Their rock’n’roll love story hasn’t been without its speed bumps but it appears to be one for the ages.

They have worked hard to keep it together since first meeting at the Summer X Games in Philadelphia in 2001.

There was a break in 2003 before they reunited, she proposed and they married on the beach in Costa Rica on January 7, 2006.

And then there was the 11-month break in their marriage in 2008, infamously and hilariously documented in the song and video for her smash hit So What, before they again reconciled in early 2009.

Only months after they started dating, P!nk made Hart an offer in late 2001 he couldn’t refuse.

It would set a precedent which has made him the most popular co-star in pop music.

Hart made his first cameo in the video for Just Like A Pill and has since appeared in P!nk’s clips for So What, Raise Your Glass, Just Give Me A Reason, True Love and Just Like Fire.

The week before P!nk was presented with the Video Vanguard honour at the MTV Video Music Awards, the Hart family reconvened in London for her headlining sets at the V festival and I asked him how his wife convinced him to be her video foil back in 2001.

“There wasn’t much debate about it. She basically said ‘Come be in my video.’ I was like ‘Ahhhhh, I’m not really into that,’” he said.

“She said ‘All right I have to put some other good-looking guy in there and I have to lick his belly.’ Well, I guess I’m going to have to be in the video.

“That’s where it started at. It snowballed from there; it’s kinda hard to say no.

“It’s not my favourite thing but I try to play the supportive role. I perform much better with a helmet on.”

The demands of their respective careers when he was still competing and she was touring the world stretched their bond to breaking point in 2008.

“The most important thing for you all to know is that Carey and I love each other so so much. This breakup is not about cheating, anger, or fighting. I know it sounds like cliché bulls... but we are best friends, and we will continue to be,” she wrote on her website.

There was clearly no bitterness and she left the door wide open for a reunion.

“He is a good man, so please support him as well. One never knows the future, but mine and Carey’s just might involve beach babies and sunshine one day. Just not right now,” she wrote.

They came back together at first when P!nk supported her man in the wake of the tragic death of his younger brother Anthony, who crashed during a practice run on a Connecticut race track in August 2008.

When he asked her to perform on New Year’s Eve at his Las Vegas club, she decided again to make the first move.

“I had made him a photo album of all the cards he had ever given me, of all the photos of our entire relationship. I spent months on this album,” she told Redbook.

“On the last page, I pasted a photo of me from a really bad movie I made years ago with my neck slit and blood everywhere. Next to it I wrote, ‘This is me without you.’

“On the next page, there was a picture of a baby. And I wrote: ‘The rest is unwritten.’

“The divorce papers that we never signed were behind that page. I was like, ‘The rest is up to you.’

“And I did all of this in his favorite bra and panties.”

On the day of the V Festival in Essex, P!nk and Carey Hart return to their London hotel after a shopping expedition with their hands full of goodies.

They insist all the presents are for their children Willow and Jameson, except one.

P!nk held up the bag from Agent Provocateur, a luxury lingerie store and said “That’s for me!” Hart smiled. Perhaps it was for him.

While their day jobs always suggested the Harts would live a roaming gypsy life, they had to learn how to bring up children on the road the hard way when Willow was born.

“I think we do it really well. Last time, it was a bit tough because it was our first time touring with a child and that was a whole new thing,” Hart said.

“I don’t sleep a lot usually so I would say the hardest thing for me was spending time with my wife up until 2am after the show and then Willow would wake up at 7am and I would be on daddy duty for the first part of the day.

“We don’t allow our kids to do the TV thing. I became a master sculptor with Playdoh. In all reality, that was the toughest, being a husband, being a father, sleeping five hours a night and firing on all cylinders for a two-year-old in the morning.

“I feel like it’s going to be a lot easier next year because we know what to expect, it won’t be such a shock. Now I can prepare a little better. And Jameson’s so sweet.”

P!nk started promotion for her 2012 album The Truth About Love when her daughter was 10 months old and finished the tour in support it when she was three.

Hart says the Australian leg in mid 2013 was their favourite as they were able to spend long stretches based in one city, using the time to explore beaches, museums and theatres with Willow.

But entertaining a toddler in the middle of winter in Europe was no picnic.

“I’m not going to make it sound perfect; it’s a slippery slope, there’s love/hate there. If we’re home too long, we start getting antsy. And if we’re on the road too long, we get antsy,” he said.

“For me, I really enjoy touring but at the same time, I despise touring when she’s chasing winter and we’re in Europe for three months and there’s two feet of snow on the ground.

“I’m very much an outdoor person and so is Willow.”

When they are home on their farm outside of Santa Barbara, California, they are very much the outdoor types.

And bike enthusiasts.

P!nk has declared herself a soccer mum but she isn’t picking her daughter and her friends up on her latest ride.

Her husband custom built her a new motorcycle as a push present before Jameson’s birth last December.

“I got her a motorcycle when Willow was born. And I am sort of building motorcycles now so I figured it was a good idea to custom make her a bike for when Jameson came,” Hart says.

“It took me probably about three months. It’s been exciting for me, over the last year and a half since I retired riding freestyle, I stumbled into it but now doing custom builds and competitions stuff with Indian motorcycles.

“I want to get her on a bigger bike and Indian has a great platform. I did shrink the bike down a bit and did custom seats and handlebars.

“She likes it. The whole family is coming on Hot Bike tour with me. I have a big competition in three weeks and built a custom sidecar for Willow but she appears to prefer the back of the bike more these days. I think the sidecar is going to be more for Jameson.”

The pair also share a love of wine. P!nk began studying viticulture on her last tour and knows she can wrangle her husband to join her on her wine courses if it involves a road trip.

“The last one we did, you did good,” Hart said to his wife. “That’s when we did the wine conference. We did 500 miles in a day, it was super fun. She said ‘How can I get you to go to this wine conference?’

“And I said on motorcycles.”

P!nk laughs as she recalled the French sommelier running the course kept calling on Hart to answer questions about the wines they were tasting.

“The best thing was the dude kept calling him out and he didn’t want to be there. And I got most of them right,” she said.

For all her songs about the good and the bad in their relationship, and all her jokes about their fights, it is beyond doubt Alecia Moore loves Carey Hart.

And trusts him. Other women who might attempt to hit on him when he is away for work, not so much.

While she is all about the sisterhood and loves to celebrate the achievements of her female friends and pop peers, any woman who would dare attempt to mess with her man should be aware she will do them harm.

“How many women hit on him when he is away... And I find that to be so disgusting. Everyone knows you are married. I am not down with that, that’s girl-on-girl violence right there,” she said, laughing as she passed Jameson back to his dad.

P!nk shared the creative process for Beautiful Trauma with Hart and her daughter, playing them her works in progress to get their feedback.

He loves watching her shape songs and craft lyrics, fascinated by the conjuring of words and sounds to make music.

When I ask her which song on the new album was the one which signalled she was on her way with Beautiful Trauma, she nominates Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken.

It’s just gotta be their love song.

P!nk’s Beautiful Trauma tour kicks off at the Perth Arena on July 3 and 4. She will then play the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on July 10 and 11, Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on July 16, 17, 19 and 20, Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on August 3, 4, 6 and 7 and the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on August 14 and 15.
