Spread good news about farming before doubt takes hold
IT’S time to start spreading the good news about farming, writes ROMA BRITNELL.
THINGS have gone too far. A vocal minority is attacking our farmers for simply doing their job, and it’s time for the Government to ensure the truth about farming practices are known.
As animal activists step up their loud campaigns — storming on to farms, stealing animals and protesting — farmers are feeling under threat in their own homes, worried about people illegally entering their properties and compromising bio security and in turn, their business.
We need to be proactive, to talk about the good farming does — not only for the economy, but also for the environment and what farmers do to care for their animals. A government awareness campaign is needed now to bridge that disconnect and make sure the truth is told. Farmers are custodians of the landscape, looking after it for future generations; they know they need to treat the land with respect to ensure the essential production of safe food for Australia, but also overseas markets, which are demanding clean, green produce.
