NT Green Asta Hill running for Alice Springs Mayor at local government election
NT Green Asta Hill is running for Mayor of Alice Springs at the upcoming local government elections, setting up round two of a Hill vs. Burgoyne battle.
Criminal defence lawyer and human rights advocate Asta Hill is running for Mayor of Alice Springs at the upcoming local government elections.
A lawyer and mum, Ms Hill contested the seat of Braitling for the Greens at the NT election last year losing to incumbent Braitling MLA Joshua Burgoyne.
Mr Burgoyne’s wife, Lisa-Marie, has announced her bid for mayor at the August 23 election, setting up a second Burgoyne-battle for Ms Hill.
Born and raised in Alice Springs, Ms Hill said she was “proud and grateful” to call the town home.
“I want to change the narrative about our town so that the rest of the country can see the real community we all love,” she said.
“As a lawyer I stand up for locals every day. As Mayor I will always stand up for our town. “Local government has the power to drive community cohesion over division, to offer support over exclusion.
“We can bring vibrancy and safety to our public spaces, resist attempts to sell off our parks and adapt to a warming climate. We can give our kids, families and young people more to do.
“We can promote all our town has to offer, so it becomes again a place people move to for opportunity and stay for the love of it.”
Ms Hill will launch her campaign at Frank McEllister Community Park on Sunday, July 27, at 2pm.
