Nightcliff will be transformed into a sea of colour and culture this weekend, as the 20th year of its family-favourite Seabreeze Festival kicks off.
From the much-loved sand sculpture contest to the family favourite 3x3 basketball tournament, there’ll be something for everyone at the Nightcliff Foreshore from May 9-11.
Taking the stage will be Territory talent such as the distinct Arnhem Land sounds of Yolngu band Wild Honey; the tropical jazz vibes of House on Stilts; Triple J Unearthed singer-songwriter Broadwing; and vocalist Juran with trio ZaZa Zoo.
The line-up will also feature Indigenous acoustic artist David Spry; iconic 80s push-band Swamp Jockeys; and folk favourite Sally Balfour with her band.
Other Seabreeze highlights include the Community Bank Nightcliff Jetty Art Space competition and the interactive Darwin Beach Choir.
As the sun sets, visitors can enjoy food trucks and soak up the atmosphere at boutique bars along the foreshore, including the Speargrass HiFi DJ takeover at Kite’s Corner.
Marketing Manager Liz Cruse said the diversity of the festival was what made it “incredible”.
“The festival speaks volumes to the diversity of Darwin and the Northern Territory,” she said.
“Families can bring the kids down, sit at the foreshore and immerse themselves in more than 180 acts, as well as the community vibe.
“But I think one of the best things about the Seabreeze Festival is that it’s completely free for all three days … it’s a really safe festival and just a great family event.”
After a massive turnout last year, Ms Cruse said she invited all Territorians to celebrate the 20th year of the festival.
“Where else can you wander for two kilometres and have something new and exciting at every turn,” she said.
“We’re supporting local businesses, local performers and artists, we’ve got plenty of food and drink brands involved; so come down and celebrate if you can.
“It brings the community together and showcases the best bits of who we are and what we are up here in the Territory.”
