A woman has been charged with animal cruelty offences after allegedly throwing a pet dog off a cliff.

A woman has been charged after allegedly throwing a dog off a cliff south of Sydney, following a lengthy investigation by police.

The 32-year-old was arrested at a Horsley home in Wollongong on Friday morning and bailed after investigators charged her with animal cruelty offences after the animal was euthanised.

The move followed a more than year-long investigation after a bushwalker heard a dog yelping near Clive Bissell Dr at Mount Ousley in January last year.

Searching around, he discovered a kennel tipped upside down at the base of an escarpment with an injured Australian Bulldog inside about 8.30am.

The find prompted a rescue operation involving police and SES volunteers, but the dog was later euthanised due to his poor condition and injuries.

Police will allege the kennel was thrown from the cliff overnight on January 22, 2023.

Investigators began a forensic examination of the kennel and arrested the woman following a “extensive investigation”, a NSW Police spokesman said.

She is expected to appear in the Wollongong Local Court in May.
