Terrifying bushfires threatened communities across Victoria today, with the devastation wrought by the blazes the largest in size since Black Saturday. Read our coverage as it happened.

Four people are missing and homes have been destroyed as raging bushfires burnt thousands of hectares across East Gippsland overnight.

Multiple people are unaccounted for in the region, with grave fears mounting for their safety.

And in Sarsfield, northwest of Lakes Entrance, only the chimney remained of one home.

In Mallacoota, 4000 locals and holidaymakers are sheltering by the wharf and in a local hall as an out-of-control fire continues to bear down.

Eight emergency warnings are in place. Dry lightning storms continue to be an issue in the region and could result in more fires.

The State Control Centre said communities in East Gippsland were impacted by the fires overnight and properties were expected to have been lost.
