To help Aussies succeed, health experts are urging people make their new year’s resolutions achievable and fun.

Simone Austin, an advanced sports dietitian and accredited practising dietitian, said setting realistic, measurable goals was important.

“This time of year people are sometimes reviewing what they are doing and setting goals, but it’s really important to set goals that are achievable and don’t set ourselves up for failure,” the Healthy Life chief health officer said.

“Don’t start too big, so you can maintain it. For example, if you’ve never run before, setting a goal for a marathon might be a bit far stretched.

“Make sure you get the right support and accurate health information, so you’re not doing activities that are not going to benefit you or help.”

Ms Austin encouraged Aussies to look to free tools, such as healthy recipes and workouts available through outlets such as Healthy Life.

Aussies can lean on tools, such as Woolworths’ Food Tracker, to help make better informed decisions when shopping.

Ms Austin said the free Food Tracker program, which was accessible through Everyday Rewards or Woolworths app, could people wanting to make healthier choices better navigate food shopping.

She said combining goals, such as being more active or cooking healthier meals with being more social could result in better outcomes. For example, regular walks with a friend could make it more fun and keeps each other accountable.

Priceline pharmacist Caroline Ficca said getting a free health check instore was a good start for people looking to be more healthy and identify possible things to work on.

To help boost people’s wellbeing and manage stress, she encouraged people to take up mediation and exercise – which was free.

In addition, she said making small changes to improve sleep duration and quality could help people achieve their health goals.
