Australia votes 2019: Penny Wong explains why Labor must come back to office

SA Senator Penny Wong explains why Labor needs to be brought back to office.

Eva the democracy sausage dog picks federal election leader

After five long weeks you’ve probably had enough of this election and just want it to be over. But if you’re still undecided, here’s why South Australians should vote Labor on Saturday:

SA Labor Senator Penny Wong.
SA Labor Senator Penny Wong.

1. Labor will act on climate change. The Liberals can’t and won’t. Ever.

If the Liberals actually cared about climate change, Nicolle Flint wouldn’t have helped dump Malcolm Turnbull as prime minister.

2. Labor will stand up for the River Murray. The Liberals will keep letting Barnaby Joyce and his mates have their way.

3. Labor will reverse the Liberals’ cuts and invest in our local schools, protect Medicare and invest in our hospitals to tackle ramping and slash waiting times.

But most importantly, Labor offers unity and stability. A united team for six years, while the Coalition has had three prime ministers and five defence ministers.

And it’s clear that if the Liberals are elected again nothing will change. In fact, it will get worse.

We know that the Liberals can’t be trusted to stand up for you.

Tony Abbott told us there would be no cuts to health and no cuts to education.

We then got broken promises, cuts to schools and hospitals, the closure of our car industry and the Liberals trying to send our submarines to Japan.

Now Scott Morrison is trying to cling to government by teaming up with Clive Palmer and Pauline Hanson.

Imagine waking up on Sunday morning and realising that Australia has a Morrison-Palmer-Hanson government. More chaos. More denial on climate change. More cuts to schools, hospitals and penalty rates.

Or we could wake up to a fairer country. A country with more hope, more opportunity, more decency.

So, for an Australia where all our children have access to a quality education – vote Labor.

For an Australia where those suffering from cancer can focus on the fight of their life, not how they’re going to pay for it – vote Labor.

For an Australia that takes real action on climate change and protects our River Murray – vote Labor.

And for more reliable, decent jobs for South Australians – vote Labor. For a fairer Australia – vote Labor.
