Chris Hemsworth’s net worth: Inside Marvel star’s $225 million fortune

He is one of the world’s most recognisable and bankable stars, but Australian actor Chris Hemsworth grew up ‘broke’ before getting his start on soap drama Home and Away. See how much he’s worth now.

Why Chris likes playing the villain

On screen, thanks to his superstar-making role as Thor in the blockbuster Marvel Universe, a litany of action films (Extraction, Men in Black: International) and smaller quirkier choices (Rush, Ghostbusters) Chris Hemsworth is one of Hollywood’s most bankable and popular stars.

But off screen, the Melbourne-born actor is a savvy business operator who has built a net worth estimated to be around a staggering A$225 million.

“We grew up with no money – we were very broke,” Hemsworth – who, like so many Aussie actors before him, got his big break on Home & Away – said in an interview last year.

“I thought I could make some money [through acting] and get my parents out of debt and pay for the house and help friends and family.”

The 40-year-old star has done that and more. From his work on the big screen, to lucrative endorsement deals, real estate investments and a hugely successful fitness app, we take a look at just how the Byron Bay-based star has cashed in.

ACTING

Hemsworth’s Hollywood career skyrocketed when, as a relative international unknown, he was cast in Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 blockbuster, Thor, for which he earned A$225,000.

By the time Hemsworth held up Thor’s very large hammer for the eighth time in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder, the genetically blessed star was paid A$30 million, an increase from the A$22 million upfront salary he earned for each of his appearances in Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Indeed, in recent years Hemsworth has consistently rated among the film industry’s big earners, reaching number two in 2019 on Forbes’ highest paid actors list (when he came in behind Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) with a salary of A$115 million for his roles in Avengers: Endgame and Men In Black: International.

BRAND DEALS

As Hemsworth’s on screen star power has risen, not surprisingly so have his lucrative endorsement deals. Most notably, the actor signed seven-figure deals with high-end brands such as fashion label Hugo Boss and the go-to watch for actors and sports stars, Tag Heuer.

Originally signed to promote the Hugo Boss fragrance range in 2017, Hemsworth now acts as a global ambassador for the clothing brand.

“Chris perfectly exemplifies the modern man of today: self-confident, authentic and approachable,” company spokesperson and board member Yves Müller said.

His collaboration with watchmaker Tag Heuer came about after CEO Jean-Claude Biver discovered Hemsworth was already a fan of the brand.

“They gifted me a watch during the shooting of [Rush], and then I purchased watches for the team as a thank you for wrapping the film, and Mr Biver heard about this [purchase] and thought I’d be a good fit, and we started an official relationship. I just loved their watches, so it started quite organically,” Hemsworth said.

And Biver said signing Hemsworth was a no-brainer. “Chris is loyal to the brand and the perfect combination – great man, great father, a successful actor and Australian, which is an important market for us.”

REAL ESTATE

When it comes to his real estate portfolio, Hemsworth seems to have a very stringent criteria: clean modernist lines and close access to the beach where the avid surfer can catch a few waves.

Not surprisingly then that the star has long been a fan of the California celebrity beachside enclave, Malibu. Hemsworth scored his first home in Malibu’s exclusive Point Dume area in 2013 (the two-storey home was previously owned by another famous Aussie, Paul Hogan) for A$7 million. Hemsworth sold the 2000-square metre home for A$10.5 million (at A$750,000 above the asking price) just three years later.

In 2016, he bought another Malibu property, this time with actor brothers, Liam and Luke. Perched high-up in the Malibu hills, with vast views of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the modern 1400 square-metre pad cost the Hemsworths A$5 million. They sold the property in 2021 for A$6.4 million.

In 2015, when the star relocated from Los Angeles back to Australia with wife, Spanish model and actress Elsa Pataky and the couple’s three children, the family made their home at a stunning modernist beachfront estate in Byron Bay.

The six-bedroom mega-mansion, which underwent years of renovations, also boasts a gym, steam room, media room, games room, vast outdoor living and play areas and has its own two-lane 10-pin bowling alley.

The sprawling estate is now worth a reportedly cool A$30 million and, despite recent reports the Hemsworths were looking to sell up, it remains the family’s primary residence.

APPS

Hemsworth has also made a motza out of Centr, the fitness and wellness app he launched in 2019, which features the star in most of its workouts and promos and encourages users to “join Chris Hemsworth”.

The star, who set the app up as an expert-driven fitness, nutrition and mindfulness platform, sold the business in 2022 to Jeff “Amazon” Bezos’ brother Mark Bezos’ company, High Post Capital, in a deal reportedly worth A$267 million.

At the time of acquiring Centr, HighPost Capital bought up fitness equipment maker Inspire, with the plan to combine the expertise of both. Hemsworth remains the second-largest shareholder in the combined business.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Hemsworth’s golden reach extends to social media where he is Australia’s highest-earning celebrity influencer (Nicole Kidman comes in at number two).

According to statistics released by Melbourne marketing agency Impressive earlier this year, Hemsworth, who boasts more than 59.1 million followers on Instagram, can make more than a million dollars for a single sponsored post.

PRODUCTION COMPANY

In 2018, Hemsworth launched Thematic Entertainment, a production company he created in partnership with Australian producers John Finemore and James Hoppe.

The company produced the 2020 Netflix megahit, Extraction, where Hemsworth played a black ops mercenary sent to rescue a drug lord’s kidnapped son, and the 2023 sequel Extraction 2.

Both films sit in Netflix’s top 10 most-viewed movies of all time.
