A torrential downpour in Central Australia has been channelled into a new single by a group of Red Centre rockers.

Mulga Bore Hard Rock have returned with their new single “heavy rain,” hot off the back of headlining shows in Collingwood, Melbourne, and playing at the Golden Plains and Port Fairy Folk Festival.

Lead singer Alvin Manfong said a Central Australian thunderstorm is the inspiration for the song, with a close call with nature leading him getting him inspired to play.

“Rain started pouring down, it didn’t stop. Bad weather like a thunderstorm, lightning everywhere and then boom. Lightning strikes near the house,” he said.

“I was really scared. My legs were shaking … so I had to get my guitar out and just played random songs, and then this feeling started coming on about the rain.”

Mulga Bore first shot to national attention when they opened for KISS during their Australian tour in 2022, with the band giving them the thumbs up after seeing them shred on stage.

Comprised of Thunder Child (Alvin Manfong), Desert Demon (Kirklen Bird), Desert Dingo (Aiden Manfong), Black Diamond (Talvin Bird), Star Boy (Tyrell Bird), and Queen of Hearts (Niara Tilmouth), the group sing in language – giving 80s glam rock a Red Centre twist.

The band – who hail from the namesake outstation, roughly 180km north of Alice Springs – now have three singles under their belt.

They’re also planning a Territory tour, playing at Garma Festival in August, Katherine on August 6, and shows in Darwin and Bagot on August 8 and 9.
