Missing lamb won’t survive long without its mother
A two and a half week old lamb has been snatched from its mother and there are grave concerns for its welfare.
Heartless thieves have scaled a high fence to steal a valuable Corriedale lamb from a Mornington Peninsula property.
The two and a half week old ewe lamb was taken from a Tyabb property overnight on Friday.
Erin Douglas, who helps manage the sheep stud, said the lamb’s mother was frantic.
“She’s looking everywhere for her baby,” Ms Douglas said.
“She’s our best breeder. She just doesn’t lose lambs and she can’t understand why one is missing.
“If we don’t find her soon and return her to her mum she won’t survive.”
The missing ewe lamb was a twin and her sister was also distressed.
Ms Douglas said stealing the lamb would have been difficult.
“There is a high fence around the paddock so whoever took the lamb would have had to climb it and then get back over with the lamb.
“We do have alpaca guards to protect the flock from foxes.
“We just didn’t think we would need to guard against humans as well.”
Ms Douglas said muddy footprints, vodka cans and vegetable scraps were found at the site.
Corriedales are bred for their fleece and meat and the missing ewe lamb was likely to go on to produce its own offspring.
“She’s really valuable to us,” Ms Douglas said.
The theft has been reported to police and is being investigated.
