Melbourne Grammar Symphony Orchestra’s bush tour

A prestigious Melbourne school orchestra will take its music to the people of the regions in an 11-stop rural tour this December.

The Melbourne Grammar School Symphony Orchestra will be full steam ahead across regional Victoria in December.

Eighty students will travel by chartered heritage train on a 3000km adventure over nine days, covering the length and breadth of the state from the grain silos of the Mallee to the Gippsland Lakes.

The Orchestra’s 10 concerts will be of various sizes and levels of formality in venues great and small – some nights they’ll perform in modern theatres, others in heritage halls, farm sheds and under the stars.

Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra Pat Miller said it was all-too-rare for country towns to host a full orchestra.

“These incredibly talented students will showcase their skills in classical favourites by composers such as Brahms, Elgar and Tchaikovsky, alongside new works written especially for, and about, country Victoria,” Mr Miller said.

“There will also be film music including the ever-popular Harry Potter theme song, and we might throw in a few surprises along the way.”

Students will also immerse themselves in local history and points of interest in each district.

Trumpet player and Year 12 student Tom Carne said he was looking forward to connecting with regional audiences through the universal language of music.

“It’s a very exciting opportunity because it’s joyful for us delivering the music but also for others who are receiving it,” he said.

All proceeds from the Orchestra’s performances will be donated back to local communities.
