In an “inauthentic” and exhausting digital dating era, local speed dating organiser Casey Bruton has made it her goal to help Territorians build real connections this Valentine’s – and she needs a hand from the blokes.
“I have about 70 people registered for the event but only 25 are men,” Ms Bruton, the founder of speed dating company In Real Life Social Connect, said.
“It’s interesting because usually on dating apps it the opposite to that … there’s typically a high ratio of men to women, which we aren’t seeing for this event.”
Regardless of gender, however, Ms Bruton said she encouraged all Territorians thinking about putting themselves out there to register for her speed dating special on February 15, at the Darwin Innovation Hub.
Tickets for the event are $25, with a number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks available for purchase.
“It’s no pressure; just fun, light-hearted conversations with other singles where you can have lots of fun,” Ms Bruton said.
It can be difficult to navigate through the Top End’s dating scene, Ms Bruton said, which shows the significance of the event.
“There’s not many places to go, so I think creating this event definitely has some great outcomes for the community and can help create awareness surrounding authentic connections and meaningful relationships,” she said.
“This is an event for everyone to come along, get comfortable, be respected and have a great time.”
Ms Bruton said age should not be treated as deterrent to speed dating and encouraged others to throw their hats in the ring.
“The main age group we’ve got is about 25 to 45, but there’s obviously people outside this age range too; we’ve got some 18-year-olds and the oldest I think is 71-years-old,” she said.
“The point is, everyone wants to have the opportunity to get to know each other and have the experience of speed dating, so it’s a really great opportunity.
“It’s not embarrassing at all, so, men, stand tall, stay in the game and be your true selves and sure enough you’ll attract the right one.”
