Top End fireys rushed to a large structure fire in Palmerston, which a witness claims started after a firework went off, while a caravan has gone up in flames in the rural area.
A building on McKenzie Place in Yarrawonga was engulfed in flames on Tuesday afternoon with about 10 gas canisters the first objects in the fire’s path.
No one has been reported injured at this time.
A local business owner who wanted to remain anonymous was evacuated into the street after hearing what he described as a firework going off before the fire engulfed the building.
“I turned to see the front verge was on fire and with the wind blowing like a gale the fire’s just been pushed straight in engulfing gas bottles and cars,” he said.
“That yard has been left alone for a couple of months now we’re led to believe, we didn’t see anyone inside, we cut the gate open but police quickly evacuated us.
“There were 10 gas bottles sitting next to the house and they were hit quite early and that helped tear the house apart.
“It hasn’t been kept for a while, long grass taller than the fence the entire way around.”
Meanwhile, a caravan has also gone up in flames with emergency crews and neighbours responding to help salvage what they could.
According to the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service incident map, a structure fire was reported at Hayball Road in Humpty Doo about 3pm.
A passing resident was among the first to notify the public on social media after coming across the fire about 3pm.
He posted to the Humpty Doo and Rural Areas Community stating it was too late to put the fire out by the time they had got there.
Members of the community shared their thoughts for the homeowners with the original poster stating the fire was on top of a caravan and near some gas canisters.
It’s currently unknown if anyone was inside the property, but the poster said they couldn’t find anyone there.
On Wednesday morning an NT Police spokesman confirmed there were no injuries in either blaze.
The spokesman said a crime scene had been established at each property with fire investigators attending on Wednesday to determine the cause of the blaze.
NT Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for comment.
