Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds are celebrating after Deadpool and Wolverine’s historic weekend at the box office.

Aussie star Hugh Jackman has taken to social media to celebrate the fact that his latest movie has snagged the top spot on screens around the globe in its opening weekend.

To the theme of Madonna’s Like A Prayer, Jackman posted a photo to Instagram and X showing him in Wolverine’s distinctive yellow costume, holding a framed picture that says “#1 MOVIE IN THE WORLD.”

“Wolverine and Deadpool is the #1 movie in the world. Thank you ALL!” the star wrote in the caption.

Three hours earlier, Jackman posted video of himself riding in a car and looking at his phone and laughing and crying.

It appears he may have been watching the movie on his phone as he posted no caption other than an emoji of tears of joy and the hashtag for the movie.

Deadpool and Wolverine opened in the US taking $A310 million at the domestic box office, making it the highest grossing US R-rated (MA-15+ in Australia) weekend opening ever.

“This is kind of hard to process,” wrote Reynolds. “But thank you to everyone who went to see the film this weekend.”

His co-star Ryan Reynolds said he didn’t know how to process the historic weekend at the box office.

He shared his shock and thanks in a statement on his Instagram story.

The movie outstripped industry pundits’ expectations, which had expected the opening to gross around $US160-$US180 million.

But the target was exceed as audiences rushed to the opening weekend to avoid spoilers.

Internationally, the film has raked in even more than the US box office receipts, taking the global total to $A668.45 million.

Deadpool and Wolverine’s success has given a much need boost to the Marvel Universe and Disney, as well as restoring some economic faith in cinemas after a glut of streaming content.

The release of the film also coincides with Comic-Con in San Diego, which saw Jackman and co-star Ryan Reynolds make live guest appearances at a surprise screening of the superhero flick.
