Chris Brown allegedly smashed tequila bottle over music producer’s head at nightclub
A London judge ordered singer Chris Brown be remanded in custody, throwing his world tour into doubt as he faces charges he launched an “unprovoked attack” on a music producer in a club.
Chris Brown has been remanded in custody until June 13 by a UK court, charged with assault over a 2023 incident.
The judge’s decision on Friday to reject his bail request throws into doubt the start of Brown’s next tour, with shows already sold-out in the Netherlands on June 8 and Germany on June 11.
Brown, a two-time Grammy winner who has sold tens of millions of records worldwide, was arrested in the early hours of Thursday at a Manchester hotel and charged over the alleged assault at a London nightclub in 2023, police said.
The 36-year-old appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Friday, where District Judge Joanne Hirst remanded him in custody until a plea and trial preparation hearing at London’s Southwark Crown Court on June 13.
Brown is due to play in Germany that day, and has a series of shows planned in the UK and Europe during June and July, before heading to the United States.
Wearing a black T-shirt, Brown spoke to confirm his name, age and the address of the hotel where he was staying.
The “Run It!” singer was arrested at 2am outside of the five-star Lowry Hotel, for an incident that happened in February 2023 at the trendy Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London.
According to the Sun, the R&B star was held on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm to music producer Abe Diaw.
The New York Post said it had reached out to Brown’s lawyer for comment.
Diaw alleges that the rapper attacked him, unprovoked, smashed him over the head with a bottle and then punched and kicked him.
Diaw told the outlet, “He hit me over the head two or three times. My knee collapsed as well,” resulting in him going to the hospital.
Police told The Sun, “A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 02:00hrs on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has been taken into custody where he remains. The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on 19 February 2023. The investigation is being led by detectives from the Central West Area Basic Command Unit.’’
According to The Sun Brown flew into Manchester Airport on a private jet yesterday afternoon.
Metropolitan police travelled to Manchester where they arrested Brown at The Lowry.
The alleged attack occurred while songwriter Brown was on a worldwide tour and playing in the UK.
Brown is due to perform on 10 more dates in Britain next month – but the tour could be thrown into chaos by the police investigation.
Diaw has launched a civil claim against Brown for $16 million (A$25 million) in damages for injuries and losses suffered as a result of the alleged attack.
The two-time Grammy winner was planning to jet off around the world for his Breezy Bowl XX Tour – a celebration of his 20 year career.
