Fires are banned in the southern half of the NT for one day only, as per a notice issued by Bushfires NT.

The agency put out the notice late on Thursday afternoon, which states a 24-hour fire ban is in place from midnight to midnight on Friday, July 25.

The fire ban area covers much of the southern NT, encompassing Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, and the surrounding communities.

“This includes the Ali Curung, Alice Springs, Alpurrurulam, Amoonguna, Ampilatwatja, Atitjere, Barkly Homestead, Canteen Creek, Elliott, Finke, Kulgera, Nturiya, Pmara Jutunta, Santa Teresa, Tennant Creek, Three Ways, Ti Tree, Titjikala, Wallace Rockhole and Wutunugurra,” the alert said.

During the fire ban, “no person shall light a fire or cause a fire to be lit in the open in the portion of the Northern Territory within the fire ban areas,” the alert said.

The fire ban comes as strong winds and possible rain is forecast for the Alice Springs region by the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

Alice Springs can expect one to nine millimetres of rain on Friday, while Tennant Creek can expect a windy Friday with a top of 31, according to BOM predictions.
