The woman who was found dead with stab wounds in a unit in Sydney’s inner-west last week has been identified.

Emergency services were called to the courtyard of a Conder Street building in Burwood just after 8.45am on Monday August 12 following reports of a concern for welfare.

The body of a man was found in a courtyard by officers from Burwood Police Area Command, with police earlier revealing he had injuries to his ankles.

A crime scene was established and an investigation launched.

The man has since been identified as a 21-year-old university student from China.

Shortly after investigators found the body a woman in a unit of the building after watching her walk towards the apartment on CCTV.

The woman has now been identified as Xiaoting Wang, also a 21-year-old university student from China.

A second crime scene was established while the unit underwent forensic examination after the woman was found with stab wounds.

A vigil is set to be held next Tuesday, August 27, at the Burwood Pavilion Centre at 5pm.

Commander of Burwood Police Area Command Superintendent Christine McDonald said the community has been rocked by the deaths.

“There are many people in the Burwood and wider Sydney community who have been affected by the death of Xiaoting,” she said.

“She, like many international students, came to this country for education and opportunity, and for her life to end like this is tragic

“I urge anyone affected by the deaths to attend a vigil, which is being held later this month, to support each other through this time.”

Superintendent McDonald last week said investigators were working to understand the nature of the deaths and will investigate whether the man jumped from the building.

“He had some form of injury to his ankles, so him jumping from that location is a possibility, and it is a line of inquiry we will look into,” she said.

“I’m unable to confirm at this stage whether it is domestic [violence]-related.”

Police have urged anyone with information about the deaths to come forward as a strike force has been launched to investigate the deaths.
