A driver of an allegedly stolen vehicle tried to make his getaway in the sea after a wild police chase through Perth ended on a popular beach.
A wild police chase through Perth’s northern suburbs ended on the shore of Scarborough Beach where the driver allegedly tried to make his getaway into the surf.
The dramatic scenes unfolded in East Perth when a white Toyota Prado failed to stop for police, which resulted in officers activating their lights about 11am on Thursday.
Police pursued the vehicle before it came to a halt about 17km away on Scarborough Beach, a police spokesman told media.
Witnesses feared someone would get killed as the vehicle drove down stairs and footpaths along the Scarborough Beach foreshore, in videos posted to social media.
Witnesses told 9 News they screamed and ran for their lives when the man drove over a curb along the foreshore area that was crowded with people.
The driver continued onto the beach where he jumped out of his vehicle, as multiple officers chased him down on foot and arrested him in front of shocked onlookers.
