Vic road safety operation launched, after rise in deaths

Mystery surrounds a fatal car crash in Victoria from Saturday night.

A man died while driving on Monbulk Road in Monbulk, east of Melbourne, about 6.30pm.

Investigators believe the man veered off the road, travelled down an embankment and then crashed into a tree.

The man’s passing marks the 272nd fatality on Victorian roads in 2023.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner for road policing Glenn Weir said the amount of lives lost this year was “unacceptable”.

“It’s just completely unacceptable. We’ve got to do better. The road safety partners and government are all trying really hard but we need to take people on the journey with us,” he said.
