Six-car pile-up causes huge delays on Princes Fwy for Melbourne-bound drivers

A six-car pileup has caused massive delays on a major city freeway, with banked-up traffic stretching for kilometres.

Commuters heading to start their workday in Melbourne have been faced with massive delays on the Princes Fwy after a six-vehicle collision.

All four citybound lanes were closed near Kororoit Creek Rd in Laverton on the freeway on Thursday morning.

The lanes have since been re-opened but major delays remained.

An incident response team used an emergency lane to direct traffic past the collision, but queues built into a kilometres-long crawl.

The freeway is a popular morning route for drivers bound to Melbourne from the outer-western suburbs and Geelong.

Drivers have been asked to consider detouring through Hoppers Crossing, Truganina and Laverton North to avoid congestion.

The Werribee train line is also operating, and commuters have been encouraged to consider using that option to travel into the CBD.

Traffic lights will be adjusted in the area in an attempt to minimise congestion.
