Plane makes mayday emergency landing in Sydney
A plane has made an emergency landing at Sydney Airport overnight after its pilot put out a distress call.
A cargo plane has put out a mayday call before making an emergency landing at Sydney Airport.
The plane had flown from Melbourne and completed two loops above Sydney, circling for about 30 minutes before landing at the airport at about 3.30am on Tuesday.
“We have to land as soon as possible, mayday, mayday, mayday,” the pilot said in an audio recording of the distress call aired on Sunrise.
An aviation expert has told NewsWire the pilot made the mayday call following a mechanical issue.
It has been reported the plane did not break the city’s landing curfew between 11pm and 6am as it was not a passenger plane.
The ASL Airlines Australia plane has a Qantas tail number, but is operated entirely by ASL Airlines.
The plane has since flown on to, and landed, at Brisbane.
Its typical Melbourne to Sydney route sees the aircraft come into Sydney Airport from the south, rather than flying over the CBD and suburbs.
