Pez dispenser: Ellyse Perry stars with sensational knock as Sixers all but end Thunder’s season

An Aussie veteran has reminded everyone that she’s still one of the best batters in the world with a match-winning knock in the WBBL.

A trademark Ellyse Perry knock has powered the Sixers to a crucial win in the Sydney Smash that has lifted them into third spot on the WBBL ladder with a game up their sleeve.

Perry saved her best innings of the season for the derby in a game the Sixers simply had to win after their last match against the winless Heat was washed out without a ball bowled.

They faced a daunting task needing to reel in the Thunder’s 6-174, but Perry anchored the chase brilliantly with an unbeaten 77 off 44 that featured 10 boundaries and three sixes.

A heaving crowd of 5023 rocked up to North Sydney Oval to break the ground’s regular season record, with fans going ballistic for Perry’s half-century as they also cheered loudly to score some free KFC.

The Aussie legend received terrific support from fellow opener Sophia Dunkley (44 off 35) and Alyssa Healy (33 off 22), but it was Perry who delivered at the death to get her side home with five balls to spare.

The win lifts them to nine points – one clear of fourth spot – with a huge game coming up against the Stars on Wednesday.

GOOD KNIGHT

The Thunder’s finals hopes are all but over now, with the women in green three points outside the top four with just two games remaining.

A win on Sunday would’ve kept them in the hunt, especially if their game on Friday hadn’t been controversially abandoned due to rain when they were three runs away from victory.

English veteran Heather Knight did her best to get them over the line in the Sydney Smash with a superb 65 off 47 as she and Anika Learoyd (43 off 24) added 107 for the fifth wicket after they had slumped to 4-34.

The pair made batting look easy after the top order struggled at North Sydney, with the Thunder only managing 58 off their first 10 overs before they added 116 in the second half of the innings.
