Massive building fire erupts at laundromat in Parramatta, Sydney
More than 100 firefighters fought “intense flames” from a destructive blaze that erupted in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Authorities have issued a health alert after an enormous blaze that incinerated a laundromat in Western Sydney and threatened nearby buildings was brought under control by emergency services.
Fire and Rescue NSW have advised North Parramatta residents to keep doors, windows and vents closed due to smoke in the area following the eruption of an fire on Dunlop St just after 1am on Tuesday.
More than 100 firefighters and 30 fire trucks formed part of the emergency response, which escalated to the highest category available.
FRNSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry told NewsWire the “precarious” fire was rapidly spreading when firefighters arrived.
“They tried to get access into the building … but kept getting pushed back by intense flames,” he said.
Nearby residents were evacuated as the inferno threatened neighbouring buildings, including a veterinary surgery.
At least three puppies, including one who had surgery a day earlier, were evacuated alongside an overnight vet nurse.
Superintendent Dewberry said the animals were visibly distressed at the disturbance, with several of them “waking up out of their anaesthetic.”
He said firefighters assisted the nurse in getting the animals to safety on the other side of the road.
Emergency services were able to get the animals and nurse back into the clinic once the fire was contained, Mr Dewberry added.
As of 8am AEDT, the fire had been contained, though parts of the building were expected to continue to smoulder “in deep-seated places”.
No injuries have been reported.
“At the moment there is no information available as to how this fire started, but investigations have commenced,” Superintendent Dewberry said.
Church St northbound is still closed and motorists are advised to take alternative routes.
