Man, puppy rescued from SA mineshaft at Hughes Engine House after four-hour operation
The man became stuck in the mine shaft after he attempted to rescue his puppy who had fallen up to eight metres.
A man who got stuck in a mine shaft while trying to save a puppy has been safely rescued after a four-hour operation between three emergency services.
Rescue services were called to the historic mine shaft Hughes Engine House on South Australia’s York Peninsula just before 4pm on Sunday.
The site was closed in 1923 however remains open to visitors.
South Australian police said the puppy had slid between 5-8m into the shaft, with its Adelaide owner also becoming stuck after attempting to rescue the dog.
Rescue crews from the SES, the Country Fire Service, and SA Ambulance Service were involved in the operation that brought the pair to the surface about 8pm.
The man was taken to hospital as a precaution.
A statement from South Australia Police released on Sunday night thanked “emergency services, volunteers and members of the public who assisted”.
