Man dies after being pulled from fire in Epping, Sydney
Screams were heard from a unit before a man was pulled from a fierce blaze that broke out above a popular pizza shop.
A man has died after he was pulled from a fierce blaze in Sydney’s northwest.
Emergency crews were called to the Domino’s eatery on Oxford St, Epping, about 4.25am. A fire had broken out in a commercial storage unit above the restaurant.
Emergency services callers reported hearing screams from the unit, raising concerns that someone might be trapped inside.
Eleven fire trucks and more than 50 firefighters responded to the incident, with additional support from NSW Police and NSW Ambulance.
Upon arrival, crews found the first floor unit above the restaurant engulfed in flames.
Firefighters forced their way in by crawling under a jammed door.
Once inside, they discovered an unconscious 55-year-old man and carried him out of the burning structure.
CPR was initiated at the scene before the man was transported to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he later died.
Fire NSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said the firefighters’ actions under trying conditions were commendable.
“I was impressed by the professionalism of the firefighters doing their job. This is what our firefighters train for and they did a good job under trying conditions,” he said.
A NSW Police spokesperson said investigations into the circumstances of the fire were ongoing.
“The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time,” they said.
Footage from the scene shows significant damage to the level above the Domino’s.
