Police are working to identify two bodies discovered at a building in Sydney’s inner-west as they probe the possibility of a murder-suicide.

Emergency services were called to the courtyard of a Conder Street building in Burwood just after 9.45am on Monday following reports of a concern for welfare.

The body of a man was found in a courtyard by officers from Burwood Police Area Command.

A crime scene was established and an investigation launched.

Speaking to media on Monday afternoon, Superintendent Christine McDonald said soon after the first discovery, investigators found the body a woman in a unit of the building after watching her walk towards the apartment on CCTV.

While the two individuals are yet to be formally identified, police believe the man and woman were “Asian in appearance” and aged in their 20s or 30s.

Superintendent McDonald said investigators are working to understand the nature of the deaths and will investigate whether the man jumped from the building.

“He had some form of injury to his ankles, so him jumping from that location is a possibility, and it is a line of inquiry we will look into,” she said.

“I’m unable to confirm at this stage whether it is domestic [violence]-related,”

The unit is set to undergo forensic examination.

A resident of the building complex, 37-year-old Steven Jiang, said he was shocked when he woke up to see a body under a sheet and police outside his balcony.

“We realised there were bodies just underneath our balcony, now I know there’s two bodies — so it’s a bit shocking,” he said.

“We saw a sheet reflected in the window and we got shocked, and then we knew something’s probably happened.”

He said he just wants to know what’s happened, as the building is quite safe.

“The building is definitely secure, there’s swipes (to get) through everywhere in the gate and in the lift,” he said.

“So it can’t be a stranger that went in the apartment, it must be someone they know.”

He said it’s a relatively safe neighbourhood, but noted a lot of people visit the area as there’s quite a bit of parking and restaurants.

“I think it’s okay for residents, it’s a safe area for residents but there is a lot of people that come to this area because it’s very convenient for parking and restaurants,” he said.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
