The announcement that the beloved Aussie animated series Bluey, is heading to the big screen in 2027 has sent fans into a flurry of speculation about what surprises the feature-length film might hold.

With series creator Joe Brumm at the helm, the Queensland-produced movie promises to continue the adventures of Bluey, Bingo, and their parents Bandit and Chilli — but the question on everyone’s lips is: who else will join them, and what will they be doing?

Over the years, Bluey has become a magnet for high-profile guest stars, including Natalie Portman, who narrated a whale documentary in the episode Whale Watching, and Eva Mendes, who voiced a yoga instructor in Born Yesterday.

Robert Irwin charmed fans as toy store employee Alfie in The Quiet Game, while Hamish Blake and Zoë Foster Blake appeared as a couple shopping in Hammerbarn.

British comedians Josh Widdicombe, Rob Beckett, and Alex Brooker also made memorable cameos in the minisode Butlers.

Now, fans are betting the film will unite this star-studded roster for a series of cameo appearances. “I bet they’ll have all the celebs back for this,” one fan speculated, while another predicted, “It’s going to be like a greatest hits of Bluey moments with all the famous voices returning.”

Fans and social media users are also speculating that other iconic Australian stars with voice acting experience might join the cast of the Bluey film.

Many are hoping for appearances from Hugh Jackman, known for his voice work in the animated film Flushed Away and cameos in Rick and Morty and Big Mouth.

Chris Hemsworth, who recently lent his voice to Transformers One, and Cate Blanchett, celebrated for her role as Valka in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, are also among the stars fans are eager to see involved.

The movie, to be produced by Ludo Studio in collaboration with BBC Studios, has already confirmed the return of Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack as Chilli and Bandit, along with composer Joff Bush, whose music has been a cornerstone of the show’s charm.

The film’s potential length has also sparked lively debate among fans.

Wednesday’s announcement confirmed it would be a feature film, but some worry it might not be long enough to satisfy the appetite of Bluey’s devoted fanbase.

These concerns, however, have been largely dismissed by industry experts, who point out that feature films typically run anywhere from 75 to 210 minutes.

Given the success of extended episodes like the 28-minute special The Sign, many believe the production team is more than capable of delivering a cinematic experience that allows for deeper storytelling and longer narrative arcs.

Speculation has also extended to the storyline, with many overseas fans suggesting it could take the Heelers overseas for a grand adventure.

“I’d like a Bluey Goes to America or Bluey Goes to England,” one fan posted.

“Bandit is an archaeologist, so there are plenty of places where he can go to give talks so his family can come along!” Others have floated the title Bluey’s Big Vacation.

However, Aussie fans are adamant that the story should stay true to its roots.

“That will definitely never happen,” one redditor wrote.

“The whole motivation for making Bluey was to create something for Aussie kids as Australian as possible. The fact it’s also popular outside Australia is purely a side benefit.”

Adding intrigue is the possibility of a time jump.

During his announcement that he would step away from the series to focus on the film, Brumm admitted, “I’m finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four-to-six-year-old world and write authentically.”

This has fuelled theories that the film could depict Bluey and Bingo as pre-teens or teenagers — a necessity, some believe, given the natural ageing of the young voice actors who portray them.

“Guessing that confirms the Bluey movie will have a time jump?” one fan asked.

The identities of the child voice actors remain a closely guarded secret, as they are not credited in the show to protect their privacy. However, Brumm has previously disclosed, “Bluey, Bingo and some of their friends are voiced by children of the production crew.”

Fans are also drawing parallels to The Sign, a 28-minute Bluey special that tackled weightier themes like moving house and concluded with a touching timeskip showing a grown-up Bluey visiting her parents.

The episode’s extended runtime and emotional depth have many believing it could serve as a blueprint for the film.
