‘Barbie’ thrills audiences and critics as Margot Robbie stuns at world premiere

Aussie movie star Margot Robbie has stunned critics and audiences alike at the world premiere of ‘Barbie’ in a role she was “born to play”. See the pics.

Margot Robbie stunned on the pink carpet to celebrate blockbuster movie Barbie’s long-awaited world premiere in Los Angeles.

The Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall was transformed into Barbie Dreamworld, with a replica of Barbie’s DreamHouse, with pink popcorn and even security guards dressed in pink polo shirts.

Two-time Oscar nominee Robbie went against expectations by not wearing pink and wearing a black strapless sequined dress and a diamante choker.

The dress was designed by Schiaparelli Haute Couture as a homage to a 1960s version of Barbie.

Co-star Ryan Gosling, 42, who plays Ken, wore a pale pink Gucci suit.

Actress Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, and writer-director Greta Gerwig brought their best Barbie looks to the pink carpet as well.

Gerwig was dressed head-to-toe in pink, from her purse to her blazer and shoes in fluoro hot pink.

Some more celebrities to attend the premiere included Nicki Minaj, Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa who contributed to the soundtrack.

RuPaul’s Drag Race former contestant Trixie Mattel (whose drag name was inspired by the toy manufacturer behind Barbie), and Wonder Woman’s Gal Gadot were also there.

Gerwig’s co-writer and partner Noah Baumbach skipped the premiere in solidarity with the Writers Guild of America strike, according to Variety.

“My co-writer and co-creator, my partner in love and art, Noah Baumbach is not here. He is passionately supporting the fight of the Writers Guild of America,” Gerwig said on behalf of Baumbach.

“He is a Barbie girl. Nothing in Barbie happened without him, and nothing in Hollywood happens without writers.”

The film, which follows Barbie as she travels to the “real world” beyond Barbie’s Dreamworld, was recently pulled from screens in Vietnam after a segment showing a map representing China’s claimed borders in the region.

Nevertheless, Barbie has generated major hype around the world with premieres and parties publicising the movie, from Seoul, to “Barbiefying” Sydney’s Bondi Icebergs ocean pool to creating a Malibu DreamHouse on Airbnb.

Social media responded to the LA premiere with raves.

ScreenRant writer Joseph Deckelmeier called the film “funny, bombastic and very smart,” while Variety’s social media editor called the movie “perfection”... “The entire cast shines, especially Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in roles they were clearly born to play.”

“I think the film serves Margot Robbie’s Barbie and her journey especially well, but there are other characters experiencing important arcs that needed more screen time to really dig into and explore to the fullest,” wrote Collider’s Perri Nemiroff.

Barbie opens in Australian cinemas on July 20.
