Golden Globes 2024 nominations: Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debicki, Sarah Snook
The Barbie star is one of three Australian starlets to scoop nominations for the 2024 Golden Globes.
Margot Robbie’s Barbie has topped the newly revamped Golden Globes film nominations.
Barbie, a fun feminist satire and global box office phenomenon received nine nominations, including best comedy as well as acting nominations for stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
This year’s top-grossing movie, earning more than $1.4 billion ($A2.13bn) globally, Barbie also scooped three best song nominations, and recognition for its writer-director Greta Gerwig.
Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed drama about the inventor of the nuclear bomb, earned eight nominations, including best drama and best director.
The two films – nicknamed “Barbenheimer” after their theatrical releases happened to fall on the same date – dominated and revived the box office, and now have a strong start to Hollywood’s film awards season, which ends with the Oscars in March.
Other Aussies recognised by the awards, which cover both film and television, are Elizabeth Debicki for her acclaimed portrayal of Diana, Princess of Wales in The Crown, for which she was nominated for Best supporting female actor on television series.
And Sarah Snook was nominated for Best female actor in a television series – drama for Succession.
Succession topped the drama section with nine nominations.
It comes in a pivotal year of transformation for the Golden Globes, which were once a popular forerunner to the Oscars.
Top US television network, CBS has stepped in to become the new home of the Globes, after long-term host NBC ended its deal to broadcast the event.
CBS is hoping for better ratings, after the 2023 Globes slumped to a historic low of just 6.3 million viewers, even as other shows such as the Oscars recovered from pandemic viewership slumps.
The 81st Golden Globes ceremony will take place in Beverly Hills on January 7.
