Fancy frocks and classy dresses were on display as thousands made their way down for the 2024 edition of Ladies Day. Check out all the photos from the big day.
Leonie McNally started the Darwin Ladies Day in 1987 and it has since grown into a pivotal day of the Cup Carnival filled with classy outfits and colours.
She and her husband, the then Darwin Turf Club chairman James McNally, brought back a slice of the festivities worldwide carnivals enjoy to make it a special part of the Top End racing calendar.
And now all these years later it, along with the Gala Ball they also began, remains a massive part of the Carnival that Ms McNally still feels very passionate about.
“It’s absolutely wonderful, and I am so proud that this had continued to where it is today,” she said.
“Darwin was our home and we wanted to elevate the event, no one dressed up back then so we wanted to make it something really special
“That first step was obviously a very different thing, no one was aware of it but we had a small group of people and a fabulous fashion parade as part of the entertainment.
“It has grown since then and I still feel very passionate about it and am always very excited when it comes around, particularly now that I can sit back and enjoy it.”
The Fannie Bay racecourse was once again filled with thousands of ladies flaunting their best dresses and favourite colours to celebrate the midweek event.
From trackside to the TAB pavilion there was plenty to enjoy, with two special Fashions on the Field events across the day.
Eliza Bennett was enjoying her second Darwin Ladies Day and said it was particularly fun to see everyone dressed up and enjoying themselves.
“I absolutely love it. It’s a great community out here,” she said.
“Everyone has dressed up so nice and they all look great, it’s such a fun day.”
