Alice Springs Cup Carnival a huge success in 2025

Increased crowd attendances and record entries made the 2025 Alice Springs Cup Carnival a booming success as the CLP government continues their review of the racing industry.

The Alice Springs Cup Carnival proved a huge success with attendance and field sizes notably increased compared to recent years.

Cup Day attendance was more than 1100, up 30 percent on 2024, while there were 531 nominations across the five days, the most since 2016 allowing a record prizemoney of more than $1.2m.

The five-day carnival’s success reinforces the significance of the racing industry in the Red Centre and strengthens the Territory’s reputation as a top racing and tourism destination.

Racing Minister Marie-Clare Boothby said the Alice Springs Cup Carnival was a key event on the racing and sporting calendar.

“This year’s increased field sizes show just how much people value racing in the NT, and events like the Carnival provide a great boost for Alice Springs and the broader racing industry,” she said.

“This sport drives visitation and economic growth and supports local businesses, with the NT racing industry as a whole contributing more than $157m to our economy each year, which is a figure we are committed to increasing.

“The Cup being broadcast nationally and internationally also provided a great platform to showcase the Territory to a broader audience.”

Alice Springs Turf Club chairman Andrew Maloney said the event proved to be a great success as he thanked his staff and committee for their efforts.

He also hopes the club’s return to the traditional May long weekend in 2026 would take attendances “to another level again”.

It comes amid the CLP Government’s strategic and operational review of the entire industry, in partnership with racing participants.

“This review is a key step towards ensuring a strong and sustainable future for our racing industry and will maximise the economic and lifestyle contributions of the industry across the NT,” Ms Boothby said.

Recommendations from the review will be considered in the coming weeks with further updates to follow.

Next up is the eight-day Darwin Cup Carnival from July 5 to August 4 while the Tennant Creek Cup will be held May 17 and the Katherine Cup August 16.
