June 13, 7am: A man who allegedly chased a woman with a hatchet in the dead of night in Alice Springs is in custody, cops say, alongside two others allegedly behind an unrelated assault while an unrelated house fire is being investigated.

NT Police southern watch commander Jarrad Thompson said the 25-year-old man was arrested after 12.35am Friday when he was restrained by security guards inside the Lasseters casino foyer.

The man is now on remand and “will be charged with a raft of offences” after he allegedly chased a woman into the casino while wielding a hatchet, according to Mr Thompson.

The 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital once police arrived.

She had “bruising to her face and body” Mr Thompson said.

Police also responded to an unrelated assault at 3am Friday, where a 38-year-old woman was also allegedly attacked – allegedly by people known to her.

Mr Thompson said police responded to a group of people fighting on Gregory Tce in the Alice Springs CBD, with a man and woman arrested at the scene.

The 40-year-old man was allegedly armed with a machete and was charged with aggravated assault and being armed in public.

A 42-year-old woman was also hit with the same charges, and the duo are on remand awaiting their first court appearance.

Earlier in the night, at 9.28pm, police also responded a house fire on Parke Cres in the Gap.

The unrelated house fire caused “significant damage” Mr Thompson said, but there were no injuries reported.

A crime scene has been declared and a fire investigator is due to head to the scene this morning, Mr Thompson said.
