3G network shutdown delayed until October

Regional Australians reliant on 3G networks will have just over two months to make arrangements, after Telstra and Optus both agreed to delay the 3G shutdown to October 28.
Telstra’s shutdown was due to occur at the end of August, with Optus to follow in September, but in a joint statement released today they said the extra time will be used to execute one last push for mass public awareness of the impending closures.
National Farmers’ Federation president David Jochinke said ensuring devices are compatible with 4G and 5G networks should be at the “top of your priority list” for farmers.
“This is not the time to take a ‘she’ll be right’ attitude,” Mr Jochinke said.
“If you don’t know whether your device runs on the 3G network, you must contact the manufacturer to find out.
“We can’t keep prolonging the inevitable. Let’s use this time wisely and then start focusing on how we move forward and address the systemic issues facing rural connectivity.”
Telstra and Optus said it is critical customers check their devices to ensure they are still able to call emergency services and communicate with their service providers once the 3G network is switched off.
