A teenage boy who allegedly tried to punch a woman in the face before threatening multiple cars with a metal pole has been charged.
The boy, 15, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault; two counts of damage to property; one count of endanger occupants of vehicle; and one count of going armed in public.
Northern Territory Police allege that the boy tried to punch a woman at about 2pm Thursday on the corner of Progress Drive and Boetdoemba St in Nightcliff — right next door to the Nightcliff Police Station.
The woman dodged the punch, police say, and then ran away.
It was further alleged by police that the boy armed himself with a metal pole and glass bottle shortly later and walked along Progress Dr towards Bagot Rd.
Police say the boy then threw the pole at a car, causing damage and “frightening” the occupants.
He allegedly rearmed himself with the pole shortly later and continued to walk along Progress Dr.
Police say the boy allegedly walked towards a stationary car containing a woman and two young children and “threatened” them by raining the metal pole and motioning as though he was going to smash the windscreen.
“The actions of the offender terrified the female and children inside the vehicle,” a spokesperson for NT Police said.
The boy continued with his behaviour, police say, and allegedly damaged further cars that were driving through the area by allegedly throwing a bottle at one and hitting another multiple times with the metal pole.
Officers from the Territory Safety Division later responded to the incident and found the boy walking along Progress Dr — now armed with two metal poles.
The boy was arrested and charged.
He was remanded to appear in court Friday.
Acting Superintendent of the Territory Safety Division Alex Noonan said Thursday’s events were “unacceptable”.
“Members of the community should not be subjected to this level of violence and senseless destruction,” he said.
“The quick and decisive action of the officers involved is to be commended and prevented further escalation.
“This is still an active investigation and anyone with information or dashcam footage of this incident is urged to make contact on 131 444.”
