Victorian man’s custom number plates banned over political slogan
A Victorian man is fuming after his custom license plates were deemed too “offensive” to run in the lead-up to the state’s election.
A Victorian man has slammed the state’s road authorities after having his custom registration plates barred.
The man, who only gave the name Peter, said his ‘DANOUT’ plates were labelled “offensive” to premier Daniel Andrews, who is currently campaigning for votes with the state election looming.
Speaking with 3AW on Monday, Peter said the decision to axe his paid-for plates — which did not contain any obscenities — was a violation of free speech.
He said he previously bought plates with political messages in the past, plastering ‘RUDDUD’ behind his vehicle during Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s leadership.
“Freedom of speech obviously not allowed in Victoria,” he told 3AW drive host Tom Elliott.
“I dunno, I’ll have to do something different now.
“I’m very annoyed. I don’t know how I’ve got away with all these years since 2008 with the plates RUDDUD.
“I’ve still got them. I’ll tell you, back in 08, they were a big hit in Canberra.”
Members of the public were similarly outraged at the state seemingly clamping down on messaging that could hinder the Andrews government’s election for a third term.
“What is this state coming to? What is so offensive about this? If these kinds of things are so offensive to Dan and band of followers then why don’t they ban all the political ads? I bet if the plate read DANIN it wouldn’t have been an issue?,” one person commented.
Andrews is currently fighting to continue his reign over Victoria after courting considerable backlash over the state’s Covid-19 policies, including the 100-day Melbourne lockdown in 2020.
Peter Dutton this week told his federal colleagues the Victorian Premier “deserves to go” ahead of the state poll.
The Opposition Leader was addressing the Coalition joint party room on Tuesday morning when he wished state Liberal leader Matthew Guy well ahead of Saturday’s election.
“Daniel Andrews deserves to go,” Mr Dutton said, according to a party spokesperson.
“Victorians deserve a change and a fresh start after a difficult few years.”
a fresh Resolve poll, commissioned by the Nine Newspapers, revealed the race between Mr Andrews and Mr Guy was tightening as the campaign entered its final days.
Mr Dutton is not the only federal politician to weigh in on the upcoming state election. Clive Palmer’s man in the Senate, Ralph Babet, labelled the Premier “desperate” in his re-election bid.
“The Victorian Premier has been reduced to funding woke netball teams and accusing anyone who doesn‘t approve of him of being a Nazi,” he told the Senate.
“He gave this woke netball team $15m – taxpayer money that could have paid for approximately 200 paramedics in a state where people are dying at home waiting for an ambulance to show up.
“Just when you thought he couldn’t divide the community more, he starts defaming anyone who thinks differently.
“What happened to the kinder, gentler politics federal Labor promised? Where is that in Victoria? There are no Nazis in the Victorian parliament – but there is a tyrant, who needs to go.”
